The Northwest Region of the Texas BASS Nation held its regional championship on Lake Stamford, June 8th & 9th. The top twenty anglers faced some very tough fishing conditions during the tournament. The lake level had risen 3 ½ feet to full pool just a few weeks before the tournament. The water was muddy with temps near 90 degrees. A steady south wind at 20-25 mph on day #1, almost no wind on day #2, and air temps above the century degree mark, had all the anglers scrambling to put fish in the boat. Despite the tough conditions, some anglers managed to put a few fish in the boat.
Hunter Crossland out of the Angelo Federation Bass Club took first place in the Boater Division with a two-day total of 17.28 lbs. Hunter had a strong performance in his first year fishing the Northwest Region finishing 1st at PK, and 3rd at Brownwood and E.V. Spence. Congratulations Hunter!
Veteran angler Jim Brown out of San Angelo finished in second place with a weight of 9.79 lbs. Jim had Big Bass of the tournament with a nice 6.37 lb largemouth. Brandon Soliz, also with the Angelo Federation, rounded out the top three with a weight of 7.75 lbs.
In the Non-Boater Division, perennial favorite Glenn Hahn took the top spot with a total weight of 14.29 lbs. Anytime Glenn is in the boat, there’s a good chance he’s going to catch some fish. Glenn has already qualified for this year’s BASS Nation National Championship, and we are all pulling for him. Way to go Glenn! Finishing in second place was Derrick “Bo” Ard with a total weight of 12.00 lbs. Third place went to David Zak with 7.02 lbs.
A big “Thank You” to all the anglers that came out and fished the Northwest Region this year! This group of fishermen are not only great anglers, but they are also good friends. I look forward to seeing you all next season! If you are interested in joining the Northwest Region, email region director Floyd Kaerwer at fkaerwer@texasbass.org.
